UniKL International Buddies
UniKL International Buddies is a programme that connects international exchange students with UniKL MIIT students to be more positively engaged with UniKL. It offers a warm and friendly welcome to new international students and creates opportunities for students to share their experiences, knowledge, and unique culture with others.
Our programme is an opportunity for all full time international and local students at UniKL MIIT to reflect and gain a deeper understanding of their own culture through a new perspective, as well as an opportunity to make new friends from all over the world.

I began my journey as an International Student Buddy in 2019 back when I was enrolled in a foundation programme at UniKL MIIT. Since then, I have been appointed as a student buddy for various programmes participated by students from Korea, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
My wonderful experience since I began being a student buddy is countless. I have since made many friends from all over the world. With that being said, I have also learned many things regarding their culture which is not taught in classes.
When I was in foundation, I was a very shy and introverted person, but the lecturer who appointed me saw the potential in me. I had the opportunity to enhance many soft skills to make me who I am today.
I do highly recommend being a student buddy to every student who wants to expand and explore their potential and make new international friends.

I became a student buddy when I was in Semester 3 while pursuing my diploma. It was a great moment experience, meeting new people and also gaining new knowledge about other countries.
Before I became a buddy, I was not good at communicating, but since I became one, my communication skills have improved. I also managed to improve my social skills and now I am better at socialising with others.
I definitely encourage other students to sign up as an International Student Buddy as they can gain and improve their interpersonal skills. In addition to that, they can also make a lot of new friends from around the world.

As some might know, UniKL MIIT usually receives quite a number of international students during the summer and winter break overseas. These students are sent by their institutions to attend a short course, usually an Edutourism programme at UniKL. Student buddies are then tasked to make these students feel welcome while they are here in Malaysia. We also assist lecturers during the sessions in order to encourage the participants to communicate more in English.
Although I had to sacrifice my semester breaks, I still enjoyed every moment of volunteering being a student buddy. It is through my this that I have gained a lot of friends from other countries such as South Korea, Austria, France, Palestine, Kazakhstan, Thailand and others. Before I was a student buddy, I was a timid person. I had low self-esteem and I was afraid to talk to strangers, foreigners especially as I was afraid that they will laugh at my broken English. As such, I decided to become a student buddy to further develop my interpersonal skills and also to improve my command of the English language.
During the various programmes conducted, I assisted the students in their studies and at the same time I had the chance to learn English again and again. Other than improving my English, I am more confident with myself now and will take the initiative to start a conversation with others.
I highly encourage students to become student buddies because you cannot get this experience anywhere else. Furthermore, the benefits you will gain will definitely help you in your future, especially in your career.
